Many of us have worked for Bosses. You know, the person who pushes the rock up the hill by cajoling, manipulating and coercing his team. Bosses have authority and bosses make sure everyone in earshot knows it. They’re the people who help turn w – o – r – k into a four letter word.

Some of us have worked for Leaders. It probably never felt as if we were working for that person so much as with the person. In fact, it frequently felt as if this person was working for us. She didn’t need to resort to cajoling, manipulation or coercion.

She understood — in her core — that if we believed in the mission then we would feel pride and enthusiasm and resolve and purpose.

She never stooped to manipulation or coercion (but maybe a little cajoling from time to time). She understood — in her core — that her job was to lead people. She had strong beliefs. And, in turn, those beliefs engendered strong feelings. If she took the time and energy to transfer those beliefs and feelings to us, then we would willingly run through walls for her.

She treated us like the adults that we are and she asked for permission.
