It could be our last opportunity to ‘right the terrible wrong’ that was done to us. Or maybe we just want to help them ‘tweak a few things’ here and there about the company.

Some people believe you should offer constructive criticism, while others recommend that you should ‘lie through your teeth’ because no good can come from expressing our truest thoughts and feelings.

How about some discernment and judgement? The person conducting the exit interview has a job to do. Whether the questioner is sincere about creating possibilities for change or merely reading a script, it’s our responsibility to finish our tenure with discipline and even some class. Let’s save our worst vitriol for the diary and spare our family and friends any more tales of woe. And let’s develop enough self-awareness so that we’re not dragging the problems and personalities from yesterday’s role into our new, fresh start.
